Live Small Mammal Trapping Before the students could enjoy their free time Wednesday evening they had to set their live mammal traps. Thanks to Erin for giving the students an introduction to the different small animals in the Adirondacks. They range in size from large flying squirrels to the smallest of voles which are the size of a pinkey finger. She also shared some specimens of the animals which the students were allowed to handle. Once outside the students were responsible for 2-3 traps each to set, bait and place in their marked locations. The students had to check the traps within 12 hrs of setting them, so as the small and very small animals would not fall prey to the cold weather while confined. The students were seperated into two groups and they had a total of 50 small traps to place. Some of the animals temporarily captured were: Flying Squirrels, long-tailed moles, deer mice, voles and shrews. We learned a lot about the winter wildlife of the Adirondacks. |
Hike up Mt. Goodnow Mountain
Thursday afternoon the students enjoyed a "brisk" hike up Mt. Goodnow using their snowshoes. Yes, it was tough and tiring, but the students paced themselves and 13 of the 15 of us made it to the top. The trail is almost 4 miles long up an 1100 foot mountain, with an additional 60 foot tall fire tower at the top. The students were able to enjoy many vistas out over the Adirondacks, and some beautiful trails blanketed with snow. The firetower was an interesting climb because the stairs and crow's nest was covered with a layer of snow and ice. In addition, the strong winds made the 60 foot climb even harder, as the tower would sway with each gust. |
Last day at Huntington Thursday evening, the students were treated to a free evening at the beautifully restored 1911 Huntington's Lodge. While there we enjoyed some free time, a rousing game of Haudenosaunee jeopardy game, and storytelling by everyone. Th evening went late into the night, while we enjoyed some snacks and beverages. Thank you to SUNY-ESF for sharing their place with us, and we greatly appreciate it. Before the vans left early Friday morning we all gathered for one last photo at our camp. On our way home we stopped in Old Forge quickly and then we made our way home to our respective commuities. |
