HEYC Winter Experience 2010

The Haudenosaunee Environmental Youth Corps (HEYC) completed another successful trip this February 2010. The Corps had 10 eager students ready to endure the winter weather of the Adirondack Mountains. The trip was help over 5 days and our base camp was at the SUNY - ESF Huntington Station campus in Newcomb, NY. We want to thank the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF) and the SUNY - ESF college for their support of this program.

The Corps was established in 2008 in preparation to the 2013 Commemorative Tuscarora Migration Walk. The mission of the camping trips is to arm the students with the tools and knowledge to sustain themselves and understand the various environments they will encounter.

The Week in the Adirondacks

The trip was open to all Haudenosaunee students in grades 10-12 but due to limited space and funding we could only accept a small amount of students. Thankfully we had 10 wonderful students agree to go, which included 6 new recruits. The students represented 5 different communities and 5 different Haudenosaunee nations (Tonawanda Seneca, Tuscarora, Cayuga, Onondaga and Mohawk).

For more details about the trip please check out photo gallery and photo gallery II, which include information about each activity over the five days. Our HETF website also has an article about the trip written by Noah Point, one of five chaperones.  In addition, you can read about the trip in the Akwesasne Times, February 26, 2010 edition.

This year we plan on multiple trips for the students, with the next one coming in spring/summer 2010. Check back at our website for more information and available applications.
