12:00pm - 12:30pm | LOCALVORE LUNCH
A localvore is someone who eats food grown or produced locally or within a certain radius such as 50, 100, or 150 miles (240 km). The localvore movement encourages consumers to buy from farmers' markets or even to produce their own food, with some arguing that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better. Locally grown food is an environmentally friendly means of obtaining food, since supermarkets that import their food use more fossil fuels and non-renewable resources. This movement is about a collaborative effort to build more locally based, self-reliant food economies - one in which sustainable food production, processing, distribution and consumption is integrated to enhance the economic, environmental and social health of a particular place and is considered to be part of the broader sustainability movement. Join us for a FREE lunch! Localvore Lunch Food Miles Challenge
Prizes will be awarded to those who bring a dish to pass and try to address our localvore movement. Food miles are the distance food travels to get from the point of origin to the consumer. Prizes will be given to the dish with the lowest food miles. Example: strawberries from California shipped to TOPS vs. locally-sourced Tuscarora maple syrup. |

1:00pm - 2:30pm | TUSCARORA SWAMP ECOLOGICAL STUDY
The Tuscarora Environment is trying to restore an approximately 450-acre common area located on the Nation called 'the Swamp.' We will be showing many pictures that we still need help with identifying names, places and dates. Please join us to remember the old days and help share your knowledge, so our younger generations will know of our Tuscarora past. If you have pictures you would like to share, please bring them with you and share with us.
