The Tuscarora Environment Office has one Emergency Response Team member, Matthew Patterson. His trainings and education have allowed the TEP to develop a Tuscarora Emergency Response Plan for the Nation. This plan is in the final development stage and will soon be initiated into the local Emergency Response community, where the cooperation of all entities including Tuscarora is crucial to develop a comprehensive "team".

2005

FEB17 - Susie's Lane Illegal Dumping Incident: Piles of trash and garbage items were dumped along the road, in the ditch. The first day the dumping was noticed, a red substance [later to be identified as transmission fluid] was leaking out of the garbage and into the roadside ditch. After some calls and police action, the owner of the the garbage picked up their trash and removed it back off the Nation. The perpetrators were non-Nation residents and the owner of the garbage was Wayne Zahno of Niagara Falls, NY. Matthew Patterson cleaned up the site with oil absorbent and disposed of it properly.

MAR26 - Old Gym Fuel Oil Incident: The 275 gallon fuel tank at the Old Gym was compromised by the smashing of the fuel line, allowing the oil to leak onto the parking lot and surrounding area. The estimated effected area was about 8'x16', and thanks to some smart young adults, the area could of been larger. The kids could smell the fuel in the air and went looking for the source. After coming across the damaged tank they quickly collected containers to catch the spilling oil and sent someone for help. They went to the Baptist Church and found someone to help them stop the spread of the contaminates. Thanks to their efforts, they saved about 45 gallons of fuel and possibly prevented a larger disaster. The spilled oil was cleaned by Matthew Patterson, and two other adults. Matthew used an oil absorbent and instructed the other two adults how to transfer the oil from the plastic containers the young adults used to save the fuel, to an appropriate container.
