2011 Tuscarora Environment

Summer Internship

Employment (2-3 positions available):

The student internships are available to Tuscarora students who are one of the following:

a) entering grade 10th-12th this fall 2011,

b) undergraduate student, or

c) graduate student.

 

The position is for an estimated 10 weeks,

starting May 16th (college students) or June 27th (high school students).

 

Projects:

 

The following projects are the potential positions available to the student interns:

Tuscarora Community Supported Agriculture  Responsibilities include maintenance of the garden, including weeding, watering and harvesting. Prepare an introductory newsletter for all members, researching and collecting recipes and storage activities for shareholders.  Person is expected to work independently, with some general knowledge of gardening. 

 

Tuscarora Picnic Grove and Nature Trail - Responsibilities include improving and maintaining the grounds of the picnic grove, including garden beds, lawn, trees, soil, and fixing the trail in southwest corner of the grove.  Other duties include preparing materials and presentations for the Tuscarora Nation Picnic & Field Days in July and setting up and maintaining waste stations for the event. Locations will be outside during all weather.   Person must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.  Improve and maintain Tuscarora School gardens and trail.  Includes maintaining gardens at Tuscarora Elementary School, watering, weeding, and mulching.  Repairing areas of the trail that have deteriorated.  Working with students & staff during summer programs to develop and deliver environmental lessons.  Work locations will be outside during all weather. 

 

Tuscarora Migration 2013 - Development of a 1200+ mile walk from North Carolina to New York. Individual responsible for planning and participating in at least one out-of-state multi-day backpacking outing with future participants. Work on establishing viable trail networks, collecting historical and cultural research and developing written and digital products for promotion and fundraising for the trip. 

 

Tuscarora Aquatic Restoration - Assist TEP staff with weekly water level readings and participate in floral and faunal studies in the swamp.  Work location will be outside.  Hours may dependant on the type of species that are being studied.  Person must be able to work independently along with accompanying scientists in the swamp if needed.

 

Tuscarora Spearing Docks - Intern is expected to conduct interviews, operate A/V equipment and participate in Spearing Dock research.  Work locations will depend on the location of the interview and any activities.  In most cases, interviews will be held in the interviewee’s home or at the TEP office.  Hours will depend on the availability of the interviewee.

 

New York State Fair - Indian Village Longhouse Project –Responsibilities include assisting in the identification of hickory trees, stripping bark from the trees, and general construction of the longhouse at NYS Fair Indian Village Grounds in Syracuse, NY. May also include developing HETF promotional material for the NYS Fair in August 2011. Work location & hours will be outside at Tuscarora and overnight trips to the New York State Fairgrounds. 

 

Indian Health Service - Field work accompanying IHS during installation of septic systems and wells.  Intern responsible for learning aspects of water and septic system operation and maintenance. Work location will be within the community and specifically at Tuscarora resident’s yards.  Prior knowledge of a basic septic system would be recommended while on this field work.  Person needs to be able to take good notes, possible pictures when needed. 

 

Plum Pox Virus - Duties include but are not limited to: Inspection and survey of properties (residential properties, farms, etc.) for the presence of the plum pox virus; communicating to homeowners to gain access to their property; proper identification of virus susceptible plants; maintenance of daily and weekly records of inspection work; proper collection of leaf samples for laboratory testing; proper use of maps in connection with survey activities.  Interns are expected to work independently, expected to take good notes & work efficiently to get samples to the laboratory.

 

 

 

Employment:

The position is expected to be around 35-40 hours a week and last for 10 weeks. Working papers might be required for students under 16 years of age. A car is not required for the position, but . If travel is needed during work hours, we will provide the transportation. The student is responsible to get to and leave work.

 

Employment Dates:

Finish: August 22, 2011

 

Pay Scale:

The pay scale for this internship position will be from $8.00 - $9.00 an hour.

 

Travel:

Travel is required of this position, which involves staying over night (ie. Native Earth Camp and Longhouse Project). A personal car is not required.
