Plum Pox Virus Survey

Are Your Stone Fruit Trees in Trouble?

July 6, 2011 - The Plum Pox Virus (PPV) is an infection common in stone fruit (prunus) trees such as peach, apricot, plum, nectarine, almonds and sweet and tart cherries. The PPV first appeared in the area only a few years ago. To help assess the damage and contain the virus to prevent further excessive damage, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be collecting anonymous data about the local area.

In collaboration with the USDA, the TEP will be conducting a survey of these types of trees here at Tuscarora over the upcoming summer. Jade Smith has been hired by our office to map out the sampling sites and locate potential infected trees at Tuscarora only.

If you have any type of prunus trees on your property at Tuscarora, please call Jade at our TEP Office, 609.3810. We can work together to test your trees and develop a strategy to rid the area of this PPV virus before it spreads anymore.

Plum Pox in Niagara County

Viral Disease in Local Trees

January 11, 2011 - Plum Pox is a viral disease of stone fruit trees such as plums, peaches, and apricots. It first appeared in the U.S. in 1999 in Adams County, PA. In the continental United States, the disease remained localized, and it was hoped that it was contained before it had a chance to spread to other parts. However, in July 2006, the virus was identified in 2 plum trees in Niagara County, NY, and a short time later, in August 2006, it was identified on a peach, also from Niagara County. Also in August 2006, Michigan reported a positive find.

To find out more about symptoms, disease cycles and management strategies check out the Cornell Plum Pox Virus factsheet. We will keep you updated about the virus and its presence in Niagara County.

Pheasant Release Party

Rebuilding "Wild Chicken" Population

October 25, 2010 - TEP released several pheasants recently at an undisclosed location at Tuscarora. Each year, Greg Tessmann arranges for a small stocking of pheasants, tahureti aøtèhaø (wild chicken), at Tuscarora which are provided by the Safari Club of WNY. Twelve hens were released in hopes of a small breeding population someday.

Many elders have voiced support increasing local pheasant populations during interviews and public meetings. The pheasant is a non-native bird brought to North America in 1857 and seems well adapted to meet Tuscarora interests in the restoration of the Natural World.

EAB Quarantine in New York State

New Findings of Emerald Ash Borer

September 8, 2010 - The NYS Agriculture Commissioner and NYS DEC has issued expanded quarantines for the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The Emerald Ash Borer has now been confirmed in seven counties in New York: Cattaraugus, Genesee, Greene, Livingston, Monroe, Steuben and Ulster. The Expanded quarantine will include these 7 counties and the eleven adjacent counties to the confirmed detections which includes Niagara County.

The quarantines restrict the intrastate movement of the EAB insect itself, nursery ash, green lumber and any other ash tree material including logs, stumps, roots and branches, and wood products. Because it is difficult to distinguish between species of firewood, all firewood and wood chips and bark mulch are covered by the quaratine.

The NYS DEC has a news released today called "State Expands Quarantine for Emerald Ash Borer." You can download it HERE.

Perils of Hydraulic Fracturing

Tuscarora Letter to NYS Governor

February 25, 2010 - In December 2009 The Tuscarora Nation Council of Chiefs and Clanmothers sent a letter to NYS Governor David Paterson about Hydraulic Fracturing.

The letter urges New York to ban the practice, also known as Hydrofracking, because of its devastating impacts on our environment and human health. The effects of this drilling is immediately felt by surrounding communities. They have to live with constant noise, odor of natural gas in the air, and clean water trucked into their community to drink.

Similiar letters have been sent by other Haudenosaunee Nations as well, including the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF). You can read the letter from Tuscarora HERE [.pdf file. It will require Adobe Acrobat reader.]. You can read more about the HETF's position on Hydrofracking at their site, www.hetf.org.

Letter to The Tuscarora Community

Open Letter about Unregulated Burning

February 2, 2010 - Open burning is a serious matter throughout all of Turtle Island.  Many people do not understand the seriousness caused by lighting that match to a pile of garbage, construction debris, tires, or abandoned trailer.

For some at Tuscarora burning garbage is the logical solution for disposing residential trash. The reality is that these individuals are not only harming the soil, plants, animals and neighbors but most importantly they are harming themselves and the ones they love.  The closer a person is to the open burning, the more exposure they receive from the toxic fumes emitting off the burning chemicals. These residents increase the risk of cancer to themselves, their family and neighbors.

You can click HERE for a .pdf file of the 2006 position paper from Tuscarora Environment Program encouraging residents not to burn any debris within the Tuscarora Nation Territory.

Corning Internships Available

Engineering Students Please Apply

January 20, 2010 - Corning internship program provides students with an opportunity to learn on-the job skills and gain business experience at a Fortune 500 company. The program is open to all students and program benefits include: competitive salary, round trip travel expenses and housing assistance.

This notice was forwarded to us by Anjanette (Patterson) Lecher, who is an electrical engineer at Corning. Her sister Andrea also works at Corning in their Human Resources Dept. They are interested in getting native students placed at Corning for the internships. There is no preference for minority or native students for the program, but if a native student applies and then contacts them, there might be a better chance of their placement. You can contact Anjanette at: lecheral [at] corning [dot] com, #607.974.4384, or Andrea at: fischeral [at] corning [dot] com, #607.974.2826.

More information about the internships are available at the corning website HERE.

Life Along the Niagara River

Help Us Understand the Fishing Culture

January 7, 2010 - Before the Niagara Power Project was built on the Niagara River, the fishing culture was a vital lifestyle for people at Tuscarora. Unfortunately the activities and traditions associated with the fishing and spearing, along with the language, are slowly being lost.

TEP is currently working on a project about this fishing and spearing culture. If you have any pictures of our people along the river fishing, or spearing at the docks, or cleaning their catches please share them with us. And if you or someone you know is interested in providing some oral history about their experiences, please let us know. We can collect them via video or audio only. Nya:we.

CERT Team Notice

Tuscarora C.E.R.T. Team Regrouping

January 4, 2010 - Matthew Patterson, TEP staff for Incident response and emergency preparedness, would like to get the Tuscarora Nation C.E.R.T. team back together again.

C.E.R.T. stands for Community Emergency Response Team and is a vital part to a community's success during large emergencies. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

The CERT course will benefit any citizen who takes it. The individual will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster. Additionally, if a community wants to supplement its response capability after a disaster, civilians can be recruited and trained as neighborhood teams that in essence, will be auxiliary responders. These groups can provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training, and collect disaster intelligence that will assist professional responders.

If anyone is interested in taking the CERT training please let Matthew know because he would like to get more people from Tuscarora trained. Tuscarora citizens trained during the initial course in 2006 include: T. Pineda, B. Bissell, G. Greene, B. Henry, S. Patterson, J. Patterson, T. Henry, D. Henry, S. Schandreau, E. Henry, M. Kirkland, M. Woodbury, and V. Rickard.

In addition, the team has received radios from Niagara County. Any current Tuscarora CERT team member that would like training for the radios please contact Matthew and set up a date for training.
