Walk for Nuclear-Free Future

Walking to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

March 19, 2010 - A demonstration march came through Tuscarora Wednesday night, titled A Walk for a Nuclear-Free Future 2010: Northern Route. There were about 25 people who arrived at the Old Gym including Japanese Monks, Haudenosaunee supporters, local WNY residents, and eventually, a small Tuscarora following.

The walk was initiated by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Order to call attention to the United Nation's review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to abolish all nuclear weapons and end nuclear power.  There were presentations on the environment given by the walkers and the community following a potluck dinner, including the premiere of a film about local Haudenosaunee Boarding Schools.

The walkers spent the night in the Old Gym and left the next morning to continue walking to Lockport.  They will arrive at the United Nations in New York City in early May, visiting many Six Nations territories in New York State while on their way.

They welcome walkers to join them for a hour, a day, or for the entire journey. You can read about their trip at http://www.dharmawalk.org/  Their contact person is Jules Orkin, 518.566.8403 or email julesorkin@yahoo.com.

Perils of Hydraulic Fracturing

Tuscarora Letter to NYS Governor

February 25, 2010 - In December 2009 The Tuscarora Nation Council of Chiefs and Clanmothers sent a letter to NYS Governor David Paterson about Hydraulic Fracturing.

The letter urges New York to ban the practice, also known as Hydrofracking, because of its devastating impacts on our environment and human health. The effects of this drilling is immediately felt by surrounding communities. They have to live with constant noise, odor of natural gas in the air, and clean water trucked into their community to drink.

Similiar letters have been sent by other Haudenosaunee Nations as well, including the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force (HETF). You can read the letter from Tuscarora HERE [.pdf file. It will require Adobe Acrobat reader.]. You can read more about the HETF's position on Hydrofracking at their site, www.hetf.org.

Letter to The Tuscarora Community

Open Letter about Unregulated Burning

February 2, 2010 - Open burning is a serious matter throughout all of Turtle Island.  Many people do not understand the seriousness caused by lighting that match to a pile of garbage, construction debris, tires, or abandoned trailer.

For some at Tuscarora burning garbage is the logical solution for disposing residential trash. The reality is that these individuals are not only harming the soil, plants, animals and neighbors but most importantly they are harming themselves and the ones they love.  The closer a person is to the open burning, the more exposure they receive from the toxic fumes emitting off the burning chemicals. These residents increase the risk of cancer to themselves, their family and neighbors.

You can click HERE for a .pdf file of the 2006 position paper from Tuscarora Environment Program encouraging residents not to burn any debris within the Tuscarora Nation Territory.

Corning Internships Available

Engineering Students Please Apply

January 20, 2010 - Corning internship program provides students with an opportunity to learn on-the job skills and gain business experience at a Fortune 500 company. The program is open to all students and program benefits include: competitive salary, round trip travel expenses and housing assistance.

This notice was forwarded to us by Anjanette (Patterson) Lecher, who is an electrical engineer at Corning. Her sister Andrea also works at Corning in their Human Resources Dept. They are interested in getting native students placed at Corning for the internships. There is no preference for minority or native students for the program, but if a native student applies and then contacts them, there might be a better chance of their placement. You can contact Anjanette at: lecheral [at] corning [dot] com, #607.974.4384, or Andrea at: fischeral [at] corning [dot] com, #607.974.2826.

Life Along the Niagara River

Help Us Understand the Fishing Culture

January 7, 2010 - Before the Niagara Power Project was built on the Niagara River, the fishing culture was a vital lifestyle for people at Tuscarora. Unfortunately the activities and traditions associated with the fishing and spearing, along with the language, are slowly being lost.

TEP is currently working on a project about this fishing and spearing culture. If you have any pictures of our people along the river fishing, or spearing at the docks, or cleaning their catches please share them with us. And if you or someone you know is interested in providing some oral history about their experiences, please let us know. We can collect them via video or audio only. Nya:we.

CERT Team Notice

Tuscarora C.E.R.T. Team Regrouping

January 4, 2010 - Matthew Patterson, TEP staff for Incident response and emergency preparedness, would like to get the Tuscarora Nation C.E.R.T. team back together again.

C.E.R.T. stands for Community Emergency Response Team and is a vital part to a community's success during large emergencies. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

The CERT course will benefit any citizen who takes it. The individual will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster. Additionally, if a community wants to supplement its response capability after a disaster, civilians can be recruited and trained as neighborhood teams that in essence, will be auxiliary responders. These groups can provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training, and collect disaster intelligence that will assist professional responders.

If anyone is interested in taking the CERT training please let Matthew know because he would like to get more people from Tuscarora trained. Tuscarora citizens trained during the initial course in 2006 include: T. Pineda, B. Bissell, G. Greene, B. Henry, S. Patterson, J. Patterson, T. Henry, D. Henry, S. Schandreau, E. Henry, M. Kirkland, M. Woodbury, and V. Rickard.

In addition, the team has received radios from Niagara County. Any current Tuscarora CERT team member that would like training for the radios please contact Matthew and set up a date for training.
