The 166th Tuscarora Nation
Picnic & Field Days

July 8-9, 2011

This is the 166th Tuscarora Nation Picnic and Field Day and is the oldest field day held in Niagara County.

The Picnic was started about 1840, but the exact year is unknown. In addition, the Picnic was not held annually, there were some years that the picnic was not held such as during World War II.

For the first 100 years the Picnic was held at the National grove in a wooded area east of Walmore Road, a half-mile north of Route 31, Saunders Settlement Road. The Picnic was designed to celebrate the Nation and to include our non-native friends and neighbors. During the early days, the Picnic included foot races, lacrosse games and performances by the National Silver Cornet Band of Tuscarora. People would bring lunch and they would eat with their family and relatives.

In 1939 the Picnic moved to its current home  north of the Tuscarora Indian School. The program has evolved to what we have today with food sold on the grounds, and vedors selling arts and crafts.

The first Tuscarora Princess Contest was held in 1960 on Friday evening, expanding the Picnic to two days.

Race volunteers increased the Picnic program by holding a 10K race and 2.5 mile fun run on Saturday morning in 1980. Recently the Picnic has expanded more by sharing the Ben Cusick Memorial Horseshoe Tournament, Iroquois Smoke Dance Competition, and the Margaret Williams Memorial Tuscarora Raised-Beadwork Competition.

The two-day affair now includes a wider music selection, more activities and vendors, and variety of traditional and non-traditional foods and drinks. To this day, the entire event is run by volunteers dedicated to bringing a great event to the Tuscarora people. Remember to thank those that give their time and service to their Nation and community. Nya:we. Please join us for this wonderful weekend at Tuscarora.
