'Tuscarora Nation' Book
"Tuscarora is a sovereign nation in the Niagara region of Upstate New York and a member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. The Tuscarora were the first native people to be dispossessed of their land during the colonization of the United States. The certainty of their future was at stake as they walked north, beginning 1713, to join their Haudenosaunee relatives. Now, almost 300 years after this hardship, they are prospering as a people. Tuscarora Nation depicts their culture and traditions, the height of their agricultural success, the rich heritage of lacrosse, the unique fishing culture along the Niagara River, and their traditional government of chiefs and clanmothers.
Residents Bryan Printup, Beaver Clan, and Neil Patterson Jr., Bear Clan, were raised in the Tuscarora Nation. They work for the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force, utilizing oral history as an innovative appraoch to environmental protection and restoration. For Tuscarora Nation they unearthed rarely seen and touching photographs from a variety of museums, libraries, and local collections. The most significant contributions came from Tuscarora family albums, making this a truly "homegrown story."
The books are for sale at the Tuscarora Environment Office for $20.00 each. The proceeds of the book will go towards the collecting and archiving of oral history and photographic documents about Tuscarora. These efforts will be administered by the TEP and the HETF. [Currently the book is sold out, and we look to carry the book again in the near future. Nya:we.]
'Words That Come Before All Else:
Environmental Philosophies of the Haudenosaunee'
"In 1992, the Haudenosaunee - Six Nations, or Iroquois - held a Grand Council at Onondaga to discuss the environmental degradation of their communities. In accordance with the Kaianerekowa (Great Law of Peace), the Grand Council passed and agreed, based on Haudenosaunee protocols and cultural beliefs, to establish the Haudenosaunee Environmental Task Force.
This book presents the environmental philosophies of the Haudenosaunee, as told by the members of the HETF. Each chapter opens with words of Thanksgiving for the part of Creation that will be discussed by the respective author. Many of the authors have included within their chapter practical examples of how they are using these philosophies to guide them in today's world.
This timely book offers a different way to look at our relationship with the natural world, presenting an Indigenous and culturally-based approach to environmental problems."
This book is for sale at the Tuscarora Environment Office and most other HETF offices for $13.00 each. The TEP Office accepts cash and checks payable to: HETF.
