Ice Fishing Expedition

As soon as the students arrived Monday evening they began their first project: Ice Fishing. The students were responsible for putting together their rod and reels, and one tip-up per student. Tuesday morning, Neil had to assure some of the students that the ice was thick enough for all of us.

Once we were out on the ice, the students got a lesson on drilling holes for fishing, and how to put up shelters. It was an eventful day with cold winds, bag lunches, hooking bait, and using underwater cameras.

By the end of the day we had many false alarms and missed catches . . . except one: we caught a single fish between 15 people!

Bob Stevenson & The Adirondack Wild Center

Tuesday evening we had a guest speaker, Bob Stevenson from the Thompson Island Cultural Camp in Akwesasne, NY. He presented many cultural items and traditional knowledge including fire-starting, many uses for bark, and more. Afterwards he allowed the students to come up and ask questions and to view the display of items he brought.

Wednesday morning we enjoyed a trip into town for the Adirondack Wild Center. The students visited with the otters, enjoyed displays and exhibitions about the many animals of the Adirondacks, watched a movie about the forests of the world, and then we enjoyed a snowshoe hike to Raquette River.
